4 x 4 "Jeep" Adventures in Corfu! September 24, 2019

Today was a day both Keith and I were looking forward to. We would be docking in Corfu, Greece, which really neither of us knew much about, but we planned a 4 x 4 "Jeep" excursion and that sounded like it was going to be a fun day! We didn't dock until 10 am, so we had a nice relaxing morning, eating our breakfast out on the patio at Spice H20. As we got closer to shore we went up to the top deck to take some pictures!

There were quite a few ships in port already so we were glad to have this particular excursion booked. Ours was a small group and by the sounds of it, we would be away from the more crowded areas of the island for the most part.

We had a short walk to where our vehicles were parked, filled out all of the necessary paperwork and our guide gave us a brief rundown on where we would be heading. There were about 5 vehicles in our group if I remember correctly. We would do our best to stay together! We'd be making a few photo stops on the way to our first destination.

Once we got out of the port area we were in a much older section of the island. The road were quite narrow and we were later told that it had only been a few years that they had started driving in those sections of the island. Previously they walked or used donkeys as their means of transportation. Driving along those narrow and winding roads was a lot of fun!

We just hoped that no one was coming towards us, ever!!

Once we left the villages we started the winding climb up the mountainside. We had some fantastic views! Although I was hoping Keith was keeping his eyes on the road and not the views!

Before we got to the top of the mountain, we all pulled over to the side and were able to get out to take some pictures, and our guide told us some of the history of the island as well as a bit about her life.

Corfu is one of the greenest of the Greek Islands, mainly because of all of the olive trees. It was also an island that was under Venetian rule for some time, and that influence is seen in Corfu Town. There was a period of Turkish occupation, French, Russian and then English rule before unification with the other Ionian Islands to become a part of Greece.

Moving along again, we continued our winding drive up to the top of this mountain to a little village community.  Here we had about a 20 minute stop where we could grab a little snack, drink and stop in the couple of shops in the town center.

This map of Corfu was on the side of one of the cafe's in town. Our driving route was basically a loop around the bottom 2/3 of the island, and it looks much bigger than it is in on the map! Corfu is about 40 miles long and 17 miles wide.

Before heading out again, we took some more pictures and off in the distance you can see Albania

Now we would start the winding drive back down the mountainside!

Our next stop was an overlook to see the most beautiful blue sea! The pictures don't even come close to doing this view justice. It was truly breathtaking!

From here we had a traditional tapas style Greek lunch in a restaurant overlooking this amazing view.

After lunch we had one more stop! Back in our vehicles and off we went.

Corfu is known for Koumkouat liquor and we were visiting a distillery to see what that was all about!

We had a little lesson on how the liquor is made and what different types they can make, and then of course we got to sample some!

And buy some! Which of course we did! After the distillery we all went back to where we started, we dropped off our vehicle, and said goodbye to our new friends.  It was time to head back to our ship.

After dinner we went to the show for the night, we both remember it being ok. But it was a long day and it probably would have taken a lot for something to really "WOW" us after the day we had!  We loved our day in Corfu today and felt that the excursion we chose was fantastic. It was definitely the perfect was for us to have spent our day!
